Automatic identification and data capture (AIDC)
Auto-Identification and Data Capture is the use of machine readable codes such as Barcodes and Radio Frequency ID tags using the GS1 Global standards.
The programme has been running since 2007 and now has over 350 NHS members who have implemented systems to improve:
- Patient Identification
- Medical Record Tracking
- Sterile Services
- Pharmacy and
- Asset Management
Originating from the DH policy document 'Coding for success', the programme continues to deliver cost savings, productivity gains and improved patient safety through consistent implementation of systems based on GS1 coding standards.
See this map showing the currently deployed AIDC systems in the NHS.
